31 days {19}: open shelving

Welcome to Day 19 of "31 days to a Remodeled Room."  Yesterday I took you into Becky's kitchen for a first look at the newly painted cabinets.  Today, we're going to consider open shelving.  Here are some of the inspiration photos I pulled to work from:

Photos from Kitchen Design Ideas; Southern Living; (source?); Southern Living; Your Decorating Hotline; & (source?)
I thought some open shelving on each side of the window over the sink would give the kitchen some visual interest.  I recommended removing those two cabinets and replacing them with shelving in a similar style to the photo above in the bottom right corner.  But where cost is an issue, or when you are not sure that you want to commit to that look, removing your cabinet doors can be a good transition step, which is what we decided to do in Becky's kitchen.

After removing the doors, we filled in the holes left from the hardware and painted the insides of the cabinets.  The shelves and sides are white like the cabinets with the back painted in the same greige as the walls.  Then we organized them with attractive tableware and voila...

Are you starting to see all the elements come together?  I'd love to hear what you think of the remodel and the series so far.  What changes have been the most inspiring?  How far along are you in your list of updates?

Next...new kitchen lighting.
